Disinfection bags should not be confused with disinfection or simple disinfection. To disinfect an item, even to remove all microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses, disinfection is only an incomplete way to kill some microbial surface items. Sometimes cleaning a single item is enough to complete the task at hand, but sometimes a more rigorous approach must be taken. Items must first be removed from any sediment and organic matter, and then must be thoroughly rinsed before the instruments are wrapped or packed in bags. Continuous rolls or "reels" may also be purchased from certain manufacturers.

Common autoclaves include syringes, catheters, reusable instruments, and gauze dressings. Even disposable items should be packaged to ensure hygienic integrity. Disinfecting bags are also known as "stripable bags" because they are made of clear plastic that can be easily peeled off the back of plastic paper. Autoclave procedures must be followed to ensure that each item has been properly disinfected. Bags must not be stacked or overloaded into sterilizing equipment, and the manufacturer's recommendations must follow the use of their products. Sterilization bags are also being used in other industries. Tattoo artists use them to disinfect needles, body piercing equipment, and provide supplies for disinfecting piercing guns and body jewelry. Veterinary clinics use bags in the same way they are used in human medicine.
